Ruoxi Bian


Chinese mezzo-soprano Ruoxi Bian has gained recognition for her warm vocal timbre, expressive musicality, and engaging stage presence. Through out the 2025–26 season, she is engaged as a Studio Artist with Opera Orlando, performing a diverse range of roles including Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Musetta (La Bohème), and Praskowia (The Merry Widow). She will also be featured as a soloist in the company’s 10th Anniversary concert, A Decade of Divas with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, in addition to concerts and community performances throughout the season.
Ruoxi’s operatic experience spans a wide stylistic spectrum. Her additional full production credits include Minskwoman (Flight), Zerlina (Don Giovanni),
Ramiro (La finta giardiniera), Amastre (Serse). Her repertoire also includes Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the title role in Carmen, Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), and Mallika (Lakmé), reflecting versatility and dramatic depth across the mezzo-soprano repertoire.
Her artistry has been recognized through numerous awards and competitions. Ruoxi was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Idaho–Montana District) and the Michigan State University Honors Competition, and received First Prize at both the Singapore Zhongsin International Music Competition and the San Jose International Music Festival.
Ruoxi earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance from Michigan State University. She also holds a Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Minzu University of China.
Committed to artistic scholarship as well as performance, Ruoxi was awarded the MSU Dissertation Completion Award for her Chinese translation and adaptation of The Vaccai Project by Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff. The publication, forthcoming in China, offers historically informed vocal guidance for Chinese singers and seeks to foster artistic development while bridging vocal traditions between East and West.
As her career continues to evolve, Ruoxi remains dedicated to bringing vivid and diverse human stories to life through music and performance. With nuanced emotional insight and expressive depth, she inhabits each role. From mischievous boys and complex and compelling women to expectant mothers, she continues to create sincere and powerful connections with audiences.
